“My son, Jack, completed his DofE Silver Expedition on your course recently. I would like to thank you, and all the Chase Training Solutions staff involved, for the excellent work you do. My son had a thoroughly good time testing his abilities away from the usual routines, with a group of new people in an unfamiliar location. The experience has provided a great benefit to his development. I was very impressed with the high standard of your whole organisation and we would not hesitate to come to you again in the future.”
ADVERTISED VENUES AND EXPEDITION PROGRAMMES MAY NEED TO BE CHANGED RESPONDING TO GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS AND LEGISLATION FOR COVID-19 NEARER THE TIME OF THE EXPEDITION.
NEW FOR 2021
Worried that you cannot complete your DofE Silver Award? Want to complete your Expedition section this year, before exams? Just the Expedition section to complete?
Why not undertake your practice and qualifying expeditions in one week and move a step closer to completing your Silver Award?
We are offering the opportunity, under the #DofEWithADifference Expedition section flexibilities, for participants to complete their practice and qualifying expeditions with us during the October half-term holiday. DofE are allowing ‘back-to-back’ expeditions and the environment rules have also been relaxed, with the flexibilities to follow as issued by the DofE Head Office to AAP’s (Approved Expedition Providers) and are applicable until 31st December 2022:
Practice and qualifying expeditions can be back-to-back
- We would expect that there is a clear definition between practice and qualifying expeditions
- It is advisable that a period of reflection is facilitated between practice and qualifying expeditions
Environment rules have been relaxed
- Expeditions can be held locally
- Participants can return to areas they have previously used (however alternative routes should be used)
- Expeditions can be completed in a ‘base camp’ style (e.g. participants can set off from and return to the same campsite each night)
Therefore, participants will be able to complete the Silver Expedition section within the following programme:
31st May – 6th June (FULL); 1st – 7th August (FULL) (SHROPSHIRE); 23rd – 29th October (SURREY HILLS)
Online expedition training sessions undertaken prior to arrival.
Day 1 – Meet at Long Mynd Adventure Camp near Church Stretton (Shropshire) or, if October, Sayers Croft (Surrey Hills) and undertake practical navigation training; campcraft; route planning & pre-expedition check for practice expedition, including first night of practice expedition.
Days 2 & 3 – Practice expedition
Day 4 – Evaluation and review of practice expedition; route planning for qualifying expedition; rest & relaxation
Days 5, 6 & 7 – Qualifying expedition
Not completed the expedition training? We are also able to offer the compulsory expedition training for the Silver level, with ‘online’ training sessions, using Microsoft Teams, for the classroom-based topics (undertaken before the ‘open’ week), along with an instructor led navigation training walk on Day 1 of the ‘open’ expedition week, prior to meeting with the other members of your Expedition Team to undertake the route planning, etc. This is at no additional cost.
These expeditions are COVID-19 secure and we are maintaining ‘best practice’, following DofE requirements to meet the values, spirit and ethos of the DofE, ensuring participants achieve the aim and benefits of the Expedition section and get the most value from their experience 🙂

Bronze participants who progress to Silver will be able to use their Silver practice expedition as their qualifying expedition at Bronze, enabling them to achieve both their Bronze and Silver Awards. This expedition must meet the minimum requirements of the Silver practice expedition (two days and two nights). Participants wishing to do a combined Silver/Bronze expedition must meet the age requirements of the higher level (they must be in the year group in which their peers turn 15) and they must be enrolled at Silver.
Participants are required to complete the compulsory expedition training at Silver level, to be signed off as competent to safely undertake their practice and qualifying expeditions. This is in addition to any previous training undertaken at Bronze level and includes the topics outlined in the Silver Expedition Training Framework.
We deliver a comprehensive training programme for the Silver Expedition section that ensures each participant has the required skills, knowledge and attitude, to complete their practice and qualifying expeditions in a safe and enjoyable manner, which also helps to promote a positive experience whilst undertaking this aspect of their Silver DofE programme. We do not compromise safety, or the importance of the training topics that are required to be completed as part of the Expedition section, hence the longer training period than that delivered by some other providers. These are indicated in the Silver Expedition Training Framework, DofE Expedition Guide and The Handbook for DofE Leaders and is in keeping with the ethos and spirit of the DofE.
The training is run by a team of qualified and experienced instructors, all of whom have sound knowledge of DofE expeditions and includes the opportunity for participants to undertake the Expedition Training Framework at Silver level, with emphasis on navigation techniques, that enables participants to develop greater confidence at navigating, as well as the other aspects required to successfully complete practice and qualifying expeditions. Training is a combination of classroom and outdoor based learning.
“Just wanted to say thank you so much to you and your team for the amazing week I had last week on the DofE open expedition. I was so nervous at the start of the week, not knowing how I was going to fit in with people I didn’t know but I felt so welcome. Everything was so well organised and there was a lovely, friendly atmosphere. The experience was as good, if not better than doing it with school. I’m so happy I’ve completed Silver and my blisters have almost healed. I have made some brilliant friends during my experience and hope we will keep in touch. Thank you again.”
