Participants are required to complete the compulsory expedition training at each level, to be signed off as competent to successfully and safely undertake their practice and qualifying expeditions. This includes the topics outlined in the Expedition Training Framework.
We deliver a comprehensive training programme for the Silver Expedition section that ensures each participant has the required skills, knowledge and attitude, to complete their practice and qualifying expeditions in a safe and enjoyable manner, which also helps to promote a positive experience whilst undertaking this aspect of their Silver DofE Programme. We do not compromise safety, or the importance of the training topics that are required to be completed as part of the Expedition section, hence the longer training period than that delivered by some other providers. These are indicated in the Silver Expedition Training Framework, DofE Expedition Guide and The Handbook for DofE Leaders and is in keeping with the ethos and spirit of the DofE.
The training is run by a team of qualified and experienced instructors, all of whom have sound knowledge of DofE expeditions and includes the opportunity for participants to undertake the Expedition Training Framework at Silver level, with emphasis on navigation techniques, that enables participants to develop greater confidence at navigating, as well as the other aspects required to successfully complete practice and qualifying expeditions. Training is a combination of classroom and outdoor based learning.
“Just wanted to say thank you so much to you and your team for the amazing week I had last week on the DofE open expedition. I was so nervous at the start of the week, not knowing how I was going to fit in with people I didn’t know but I felt so welcome. Everything was so well organised and there was a lovely, friendly atmosphere. The experience was as good, if not better than doing it with school. I’m so happy I’ve completed Silver and my blisters have almost healed. I have made some brilliant friends during my experience and hope we will keep in touch. Thank you again.”
Our practice expeditions are open to individuals or any number of participants from a DofE Group and you do not have to have completed the Silver expedition training with us! They also offer participants who are unable to form a team within their DofE Centre, the opportunity to complete the practice element of the Expedition section.
The expeditions are run by a team of experienced and qualified supervisors, all of whom have sound knowledge of the DofE. Route planning and pre-expedition checks will take place indoors, the day before the start of your expedition, whilst sleeping is in dormitories, before and after the expedition. Once you have completed your expedition, we have a celebratory meal on the evening; then the following day, with your Expedition Team, you prepare and deliver a presentation, allowing us to ‘sign off’ your practice expedition! During this time, we’ll also give you additional feedback to help you prepare for your qualifying expedition.
“We would like to thank you and your team for looking after my daughter. The whole event was so well organised. She enjoyed all aspects of her stay and expedition. We will obviously call you first when she is ready to do her Gold award expedition. Thank you all once again for giving her a great time and lovely memories.”

“Dear Dave, Ben, Gaz and the team. Thank you for guiding and supporting Tom through his Silver Expedition! He has clearly had the best expedition experience with you, over of any of his earlier ones!”
The cost of the training is £85.00 per participant. Your payment covers all aspects of the training programme, indoor accommodation and food.
The cost of the practice or qualifying expedition programme (5 days) is £150.00 per participant, per expedition. Your payment covers the cost of administration, food whilst at base camp, safety supervision, and campsite fees. As a team, you must bring your own food with you for the duration of the expedition, and organise your own transport to the venue.
If you register for all three aspects of the ‘open’ Silver expedition programme (training, practice & qualifying expeditions), the total cost is reduced to £350.00 per participant.
We contact all participants approximately two weeks prior to the expedition they have registered upon, with contact details of their Expedition Team, allowing for introductions to take place and make arrangements for menu’s, group equipment, etc. A full information pack and comprehensive ‘Participants Notes’ will also be included.
Participants are expected to arrange their own transportation to the venue, however, in certain circumstances, we may be able to transport a limited number of passengers from Church Stretton Railway Station on the first day of the ‘open’ week to take participants to the base camp, as well as transportation back to the station after the expedition.
